The knowledge check is a vital part of any learning. It takes many forms – a fun quiz, spot the hazard interaction, scenario-based game, and so on. You might have it as a ‘test’ at the end of the course or scatter questions throughout the course to check learners’ progress as they go along. Whatever approach you take, the most important thing is that the knowledge check actually checks the learner’s knowledge.

It’s all too easy to write questions that don’t test what the participant has learned because they give away the answers. These are what we call ‘content free’ questions. Examples include:

  • Three of the four possible answers are obviously not correct
  • The answer is contained within the question
  • One possible answer contains a lot more detail than the others
  • The answer was spelled out in a previous question.

Try your hand at our content-free quiz. Look out for the clues in the questions. You don’t even need to understand the questions to get every answer right!
